South Fork of the Boise River fly fishing

South Fork of the Boise River

Overview

The South Fork of the Boise River is Idaho's most productive tailwater trout fishery, flowing through a remote, forested canyon below Anderson Ranch Dam in the Boise National Forest. This cold, clear tailwater supports an exceptional density of wild rainbow and brown trout, with studies documenting over 4,000 trout per mile in the most productive reaches. The fish are not the largest in Idaho, averaging 12 to 16 inches, but the sheer number of active, feeding trout makes for action-packed days that are difficult to replicate anywhere else in the state.

The South Fork's canyon setting provides a sense of seclusion that belies its relative proximity to Boise, Idaho's largest city. The winding dirt road that follows the river limits access to anglers willing to make the drive, and the payoff is a river that feels wild and uncrowded even during peak summer months. The river's insect life is remarkably diverse, with prolific hatches of golden stoneflies, pale morning duns, caddis, and blue-winged olives that keep trout feeding on the surface throughout the fishing season. The salmon fly hatch in early June is particularly noteworthy, transforming normally cautious trout into reckless surface feeders willing to attack enormous dry flies with abandon. For anglers based in Boise or traveling through southern Idaho, the South Fork represents an outstanding day trip or weekend destination that delivers consistent, high-quality trout fishing in a beautiful mountain setting.
