About Dean River Lodge

Dean River Lodge is one of the most remote and exclusive steelhead fishing operations in British Columbia, accessible only by helicopter from the coastal town of Bella Coola. The lodge occupies a gravel bench above the Dean River's turquoise waters in the heart of the Great Bear Rainforest, a vast wilderness of old-growth cedar, Sitka spruce, and glacier-fed rivers that supports some of the last truly wild steelhead populations on the Pacific coast. The Dean's steelhead are renowned among serious anglers for their extraordinary size and strength, with fish commonly exceeding fifteen pounds and occasional specimens approaching thirty.

The fishing season is short and fiercely coveted, running from late July through September when fresh steelhead enter the river from the Pacific. Rods are limited to a small number of anglers per week, and many weeks are booked years in advance. The lodge's guides are among the most experienced steelhead specialists in British Columbia, skilled in traditional Spey casting, single-hand techniques, and the art of reading the Dean's ever-changing pools and tailouts. Grizzly bears are a constant presence along the river, fishing alongside the anglers and adding an element of wild intensity to every day on the water.

The lodge itself is comfortable without being extravagant, befitting its wilderness setting. Guests share meals in a central dining cabin, and accommodations consist of private tents or cabins outfitted with proper beds, woodstoves, and solar-powered lighting. The emphasis is on the fishing and the wilderness experience, and guests who book the Dean River Lodge understand that they are choosing an adventure that prioritizes the pursuit of wild steelhead above all else.
