Avalon is the pioneering and most established fly fishing operation in Cuba's Jardines de la Reina, operating a fleet of live-aboard motherships that serve as floating lodges anchored in the protected channels of this pristine marine archipelago. Since the early 2000s, Avalon has provided international fly anglers with access to what many consider the finest remaining saltwater flats fishing in the Caribbean, with bonefish, permit, tarpon, and a host of reef species available within minutes of each mothership anchorage.
The motherships are comfortable floating hotels, each accommodating six to eight anglers in air-conditioned cabins with private bathrooms. Meals are prepared by onboard chefs and feature fresh seafood alongside Cuban and international cuisine. Each morning, anglers board poled skiffs with experienced Cuban guides to explore the flats, channels, and mangrove shorelines of the archipelago, returning to the mothership for lunch and again at the end of the fishing day. The flexibility of the mothership format allows the operation to relocate based on tides, weather, and fish activity, maximizing fishing productivity throughout each week.
The fishing from Avalon's operation is exceptional by any Caribbean standard. Bonefish numbers are staggering, with schools of fifty to several hundred fish encountered daily on the inside flats. Permit fishing rivals the best in Belize and Mexico, with fish cruising the flats in pods that offer multiple shots per encounter. Tarpon inhabit the deeper channels year-round, with fish from twenty to over one hundred pounds available depending on season and location.
