Fly Fishing Guide — Kola Peninsula
Alexei Volkov has guided Atlantic salmon anglers on the Ponoi River for over twenty seasons, making him one of the most experienced guides working on Russia's Kola Peninsula. Born in Murmansk and trained in fisheries biology at the Northern Arctic Federal University, Alexei combines rigorous scientific knowledge of salmon behavior with the practical river craft that can only be gained through thousands of days on the water. His understanding of the Ponoi's pool structures, current dynamics, and seasonal fish movements allows him to consistently position his clients on taking fish, even during periods when other boats are struggling.
Alexei is a master of the two-handed rod and an exceptionally skilled Spey casting instructor. He can diagnose and correct casting faults quickly, helping clients develop the smooth, efficient stroke needed to cover the Ponoi's broad pools effectively throughout a long Arctic day of fishing. His fly selection draws on two decades of experimentation, and his own patterns — tied during the long Murmansk winters — have accounted for some of the largest salmon caught on the river in recent seasons.
Beyond his guiding expertise, Alexei contributes to the Ponoi River Company's salmon monitoring program, recording catch data, tagging fish, and participating in population surveys that inform the conservation management of this irreplaceable fishery. His commitment to the long-term health of the Ponoi's salmon runs is evident in every interaction with his clients, from his meticulous fish handling to his passionate advocacy for catch-and-release.
“Incredible place, easy access, very convenient, the only bad thing is that from time to time you see a Russian bear and it growls at you but it is quite polite”
