About

Kachemak Bay Fly Shop occupies a waterfront location in Homer, Alaska, at the end of the Sterling Highway on the shores of one of the most biologically productive bays in the North Pacific. Homer is known as the Halibut Fishing Capital of the World, but the fly fishing opportunities radiating from this small coastal town are equally remarkable, encompassing salmon runs on the Anchor River and Deep Creek, resident Dolly Varden and rainbow trout in the Kachemak Bay tributaries, and fly-out access to the remote streams of the western Kenai Peninsula and lower Cook Inlet.

The shop is built around the premise that Alaska fly fishing requires specialized preparation that generic outdoor retailers cannot provide. The fly bins are stocked with patterns designed for Alaskan species and conditions: heavy salmon flies in chartreuse and pink, articulated leeches for trophy rainbows, egg patterns in a dozen color variations, and mouse patterns for anglers targeting aggressive surface strikes from large trout and char. The gear wall carries rods in weights from five through ten, accommodating everything from Dolly Varden on light tackle to king salmon on stout two-handed setups. The staff includes seasoned Alaska guides who can arrange single-day outings on local streams or multi-day fly-out adventures to waters that see only a handful of anglers each season. Equipment rentals are available for travelers who prefer not to transport heavy rods and waders on commercial flights. For anglers arriving in Homer with visions of wild Alaskan fish, this shop provides the local knowledge and purpose-built gear that separates a productive trip from a scenic but fishless excursion.

What Anglers Say

“I had the absolute pleasure of attending a wedding at Otter Cove Lodge, and it was nothing short of spectacular. Nestled in a breathtaking coastal setting, the lodge provided a perfect blend of rustic charm and natural beauty, making it an unforgettable venue for such a special occasion. From start to finish, Joe and Jonna, the incredible hosts, went above and beyond to ensure every detail was flawless. Their warmth and genuine hospitality made everyone feel like family. The views of the ocean and surrounding wilderness created a magical backdrop for the ceremony, and the cozy, well-appointed cabins provided a comfortable retreat for guests. The food was exceptional, with fresh, locally sourced ingredients that elevated the wedding feast into something truly memorable. Joe and Jonna’s passion for what they do shines through in every interaction. They were not only professional but also incredibly kind and approachable, making the entire experience feel personal and heartfelt. The couple and their guests couldn’t stop raving about how perfect everything was, and much of that credit goes to the dynamic duo running the show. If you’re considering Otter Cove Lodge for a wedding or any special event, I can’t recommend it enough. Joe and Jonna will make your vision come to life in a way that exceeds all expectations. It was an amazing experience, and I’m already looking forward to any excuse to return!”

“Wow....just wow! Couldn't have had a better experience at The Lodge at Otter Cove. The owners, Joe and Jonna, do a GREAT job making sure that your stay is everything you'd expect and more. The whole facility is fantastic, and Joe (whose background is as a chef) and his team prepare breakfast each morning and dinner each night. For some of your excursions, they are your personal guides. For others, they have contracted relationships with the best that Homer has to offer. We stayed for 4 nights and it couldn't have been a better experience. Great for fishing, hiking, relaxing, and experiencing Alaska!”
