Belize River Lodge, Ladyville, Belize
Belize River Lodge Shop is the retail and outfitting arm of the storied Belize River Lodge, one of the oldest and most respected saltwater fly fishing operations in Central America. Located near the mouth of the Belize River just outside Belize City, the lodge and its shop have been introducing anglers to the extraordinary flats, mangrove lagoons, and offshore cayes of the Belizean coast since the 1960s. The fishing here targets a grand slam of tropical species, bonefish, tarpon, and permit, on shallow-water flats that stretch for miles under the Caribbean sun, and the shop is equipped to prepare anglers for every aspect of that pursuit.
The inventory is focused exclusively on saltwater fly fishing in tropical environments. Rods in eight through twelve-weight configurations line one wall, with an emphasis on the fast-action, wind-penetrating blanks that are essential for delivering weighted crab patterns to tailing permit in a stiff trade wind. Reels are selected for sealed drags and saltwater corrosion resistance, and the line selection includes tropical-coated products designed to remain supple and shoot cleanly in high heat. The fly department is the shop's crown jewel, stocking a comprehensive array of bonefish, tarpon, and permit patterns tied by local and international professionals who understand the specific conditions of the Belizean flats. Sun protection, polarized eyewear, and quick-dry apparel round out the offerings. The lodge's guide team, many of whom have fished these waters their entire lives, is available for both half-day and full-day outings, and the shop staff can advise on seasonal patterns, tide schedules, and which flats are fishing best on any given week.
“This place is absolutely incredible. My buddy and I came for a 3-day fishing trip, and it exceeded every expectation. From the warm, family-style home-cooked meals to the world-class fishing, every detail was perfect. The hospitality and service are second to none—Ernest Hemingway himself would have loved it here. I’ll definitely be back. Truly unforgettable and I highly recommend it to anyone looking for an authentic fishing adventure. Oh, and on my very first fly cast, I landed a 40-pound tarpon on an 8 wt Sage—an experience I’ll never forget!”
“This was combo fishing trip/Eco adventure vacation and this was the perfect place to be. The lodge is rich with history and charm. We enjoyed the sun porch to connect with other guests, Will, and the owners Mike and Marguerite both in the morning and again to share fishing stories in the evening before dinner. We fished with 2 guides - Mike and John, both providing us with excellent opportunities to catch tarpon, snook, bonefish, crevalle, snapper and cuda. It was successful fishing and fun days on the water. The lodges' location is central to river, backcountry and flats fishing. You can catch multiple species of fish on any given day. Breakfast and dinner are served family style on a gorgeous mahogany table and the meals are always top notch. I could go on forever about the breads and desserts. BRL set up Eco-tours for us to visit the Howler Monkey sanctuary, Crooked Tree Wildlife sanctuary, and 2 Archeological Sites - Altun Ha and Lamanai, They were wonderful tours only made better by the guide Erolyn, whom BRL had set up for us. Belize River Lodge is rich in history, and the people you encounter while staying there are welcoming, charming, knowledgeable and entertaining. We will definitely return.”
